Laoshan is one of China’s sacred Taoist mountains, rising dramatically from the Yellow Sea coast 40 minutes east of Qingdao. At 1,133m, it is the highest coastal mountain in China. Taiqing Palace (founded 140 BC) is one of the oldest Taoist temples still in use. Multiple hiking routes range from easy paved paths to challenging summit trails. Views: ancient cypress trees frame Taoist temple roofs against the sea. Several scenic areas — Taiqing is the best for first-time visitors. Plan a full day, start at 7am.

Bus 304 from Qingdao center (90 min, Y=5). Bus 104 from Taidong (80 min). Taxi/Didi: 40-50 min, Y=100-150.

Best: Apr-Jun and Sep-Oct. Avoid Jul-Aug (crowded, humid).
