At the station — Bring your passport. Ticket windows accept cash and Alipay. Arrive 30+ min early for security check.
Ferry
Qingdao Port connects to several domestic and international destinations.
Domestic Ferries
Dalian: Overnight ferry, 6–8 hours. Cabins from ¥200. Departs evening, arrives morning. Scenic Bohai Sea crossing.
Yantai: 2–3 hours. ¥80–150. Multiple daily departures. Fastest sea connection to Qingdao.
Weihai: 3 hours. ¥100–160. Less frequent, check schedule in advance.
International Ferries
Incheon (South Korea): 2–3 times per week. ~14 hours overnight. Cabins from ¥600–1,200. Check current schedule as routes change seasonally.
Shimonoseki (Japan): Service is suspended/resumed periodically. Check with Qingdao Port authority for latest status.
Tip: Qingdao Port Passenger Terminal is near the Old Town, about 20 min by taxi from Shinan. For the Dalian overnight ferry, book a 4-berth soft sleeper cabin for the best value.

Didi (Ride-Hailing)
The best transport option for tourists. Chinese Uber, but easier.
How to Use
- Open Alipay app → search "Didi" or tap the Didi mini-app icon
- Enter your destination (you can paste Chinese addresses)
- Choose ride type: Express (kuaiche) is cheapest, Premier (youxiang) is nicer
- Confirm. The driver will call if they cannot find you
- Payment is automatic via Alipay when you arrive
Prices & Tips
- Most city trips: ¥15–40
- Airport to Shinan: ¥100–150
- Cheaper than taxis, no negotiation needed
- No language barrier — the app shows the route
- Drivers rarely speak English; have your hotel address in Chinese
- Wait times: 2–5 min in Shinan, 5–10 min in outer areas
- Rush hour (07:30–09:00, 17:30–19:00): add 50% to fare, longer waits
Bus
Extensive network covering the entire city. Cheap but challenging without Chinese.
Fares: ¥1–2. Pay with Alipay transport code or exact change (no change given). Air-conditioned buses cost ¥2.
Useful routes for tourists:
- Bus 304: City center → Laoshan (Taiqing entrance). ~60 min. ¥2. The budget option for Laoshan.
- Bus 26: Qingdao Station → Badaguan → May Fourth Square. Scenic coastal route.
- Bus 316: Shinan District → Huangdao ferry terminal.
- Bus 202: Old Town circular route, passing major attractions.
Tip: Bus route numbers are displayed in Chinese at stops. Use Baidu Maps or Amap (高德地图) to plan bus routes. Google Maps does not work in China.
Taxi
Green taxis are common. Use Didi instead when possible.
Fares: ¥10 flag fall (first 3km). ¥1.70/km after. Wait time ¥0.40/min. Airport surcharge ¥10.
Tips:
- Always insist on the meter (打表, dǎ biǎo). If the driver refuses, get out.
- Airport taxis have a reputation for overcharging tourists. Use Didi.
- Have your destination written in Chinese to show the driver.
- Most drivers do not speak English. Some do not accept Alipay; carry cash.
- Receipts (发票, fā piào) are printed automatically. Keep them for expense claims.
Walking
The Old Town (Shinan District) is very walkable. Zhanqiao Pier, the cathedral, Badaguan, and May Fourth Square are all within 30 minutes on foot. The seaside promenade runs 3km from May Fourth Square eastward — perfect for evening strolls.
Watch out for: Electric scooters on sidewalks. They are silent and fast. Always look both ways before crossing, even on pedestrian paths.
Bike / E-Scooter Rental
Shared bikes (Hello Bike, Meituan Bike) are available via Alipay scan. ¥1.50/30 min. Docked stations near May Fourth Square and major attractions. Dedicated bike lanes along the coast make cycling pleasant.
Best ride: May Fourth Square → Olympic Sailing Center → Shilaoren Beach (20km coastal path). See the cycling route guide.
