Route Stops — Step by Step

1

Zhanqiao Pier — Start Here

Qingdao's most famous landmark. Walk the 440m pier to the octagonal pavilion at the end. Morning light is best for photos looking back at the city skyline. The pier was built in 1891 and has been rebuilt several times. Free entry, open 24/7.

Photo tip: Stand at the pier tip facing west for the classic skyline shot with the pier as a leading line. Go before 9am to avoid crowds.

⏱ Spend: 30–45 min

2

Zhongshan Road & St. Michael's Cathedral

Walk 10 min northwest from the pier along tree-lined streets. Zhongshan Road is Qingdao's historic shopping street, lined with converted German buildings now housing cafes and boutiques. St. Michael's Cathedral dominates the skyline with its twin 56m Neo-Romanesque spires, built by German missionaries in 1934.

Entry: ¥10 for the cathedral. Open 08:00–17:00. The interior has stunning stained glass and vaulted ceilings. Sunday mass at 10am is atmospheric but busy.

Food stop: Just behind the cathedral, walk down to Pichai Yuan (劈柴院) — a historic food alley since 1902. Try grilled squid and Qingdao potstickers (guotie). Budget: ¥20–40.

⏱ Spend: 45–60 min (including Pichai Yuan snack)

3

Lao She's Former Residence

8 min walk southwest from the cathedral. The famous Chinese novelist Lao She (老舍) lived here in the 1930s and wrote parts of his masterpiece "Rickshaw Boy" (骆驼祥子) in this house. Small museum with original furniture, manuscripts, and photos. Free entry.

Address: 5 Huangxian Road (黄县路5号). Look for the bronze statue of Lao She in the garden.

⏱ Spend: 20–30 min

4

Qingdao Observatory — The Viewpoint

10 min walk uphill from Lao She's house. Built in 1898 on Guanxiang Hill (观象山, 79m). The best panoramic view of Old Town red-tiled roofs against the sea. The hilltop park is quiet and shaded — a perfect rest stop.

Entry: ¥15. Open 08:00–18:00.

Warning: This is the only uphill section (about 5 min of climbing). Take it slow. The view from the top is worth every step.

⏱ Spend: 20–30 min

5

No. 1 Bathing Beach

5 min downhill from the observatory. Qingdao's oldest and most central beach. A crescent of sand tucked between the Old Town and the sea. Busy in summer but beautiful at sunset. The water is cleanest in June–September.

Swimming: Safe between the flags. Lifeguards on duty June–September. Water temperature: 18–25°C in summer.

Rest stop: There is a small cafe at the east end. Or walk 5 min east to the Badaguan area for more options.

⏱ Spend: 20–30 min (longer if swimming)

6

Badaguan Scenic Area — The Finale

10 min east along the coast from No. 1 Beach. The crown jewel of the walk. Tree-lined streets named after ancient Chinese military passes, with over 200 German-era villas in Gothic, Baroque, and Rococo styles. The famous "Princess House" (公主楼) is a fairytale-like Danish-style villa painted green.

Best seasons: Cherry blossom in April, golden ginkgo leaves in October–November. Both are magical.

Free to wander. The Princess House costs ¥15 to enter. Allow 1–2 hours to explore all the streets properly.

End here: Badaguan connects to the seaside promenade. Continue east to May Fourth Square (30 min walk) or grab a coffee at one of the Badaguan cafes.

⏱ Spend: 1–2 hours
