How to Arrange a Car
Car with Driver (Recommended)
Cost: ¥400–600/day for a sedan with driver. ¥600–900 for an SUV or van.
Where to book: Ask your hotel concierge. Most hotels can arrange this. Or search "包车" (baoche) on Dianping or Trip.com.
What is included: Fuel, tolls, parking, and the driver's time. Driver's meals are usually extra (¥30–50).
Why this option: International driving permits are not accepted in China. Mountain roads are winding and unfamiliar. A local driver knows the routes, parking spots, and shortcuts.
Self-Drive (Not Recommended)
License: You need a Chinese driving license. International permits are not valid. Getting a temporary Chinese license is possible but time-consuming.
Rental: ¥200–400/day from companies like eHi or Shenzhou. Foreigners face additional paperwork.
Warning: Mountain roads around Laoshan are narrow, winding, and busy with tour buses in summer. Parking at scenic areas is limited.
Route Stops — Full Day Itinerary
Depart Qingdao (07:00)
Leave the city center by 7am to beat the tour buses. Head east on Haier Road toward Laoshan. The drive takes about 40 minutes from Shinan District. The road transitions from city streets to mountain highway with increasing sea views.
⏱ Drive time: 40 min from Shinan
Laoshan Taiqing Scenic Area (08:00–12:00)
The main scenic area of Laoshan Mountain. Park the car and hike the Taiqing route (太清游览区). The trail passes through ancient Taoist temples, mountain streams, and bamboo forests, with panoramic sea views from the ridgeline. Taiqing Palace (太清宫) dates back to 140 BC and is one of China's oldest Taoist temples.
Entry: ¥130 (includes shuttle bus within the scenic area). Open 07:00–17:00.
Hike: 3–4 hours for the full Taiqing loop. Moderate difficulty with stairs and steep sections.
Tip: Start at the Taiqing Palace, hike up to the ridge for sea views, then loop back down. Bring water and snacks — there are no shops on the trail.
⏱ Spend: 3–4 hours
Mountain Village Lunch (12:30)
Drive 10 min from the Taiqing entrance to one of the mountain villages. Local farmhouse restaurants (农家乐, nóng jiā lè) serve Laoshan specialties: wild vegetables, mountain tofu, fresh Laoshan green tea, and free-range chicken stewed with mushrooms.
Budget: ¥50–80 per person for a full meal. Cash only — no Alipay at most village restaurants.
Must try: Laoshan green tea (崂山绿茶) — grown on the mountain slopes. Buy a bag to take home (¥50–200).
⏱ Spend: 1 hour
Yangko Beach (14:00)
A secluded beach on the east side of Laoshan. Few tourists, clean sand, and dramatic cliff backdrops. Perfect for a post-lunch walk or swim in summer. The water here is cleaner than the city beaches thanks to the distance from urban runoff.
Facilities: Minimal. A few vendors sell drinks and snacks. Bring your own beach gear.
⏱ Spend: 30–60 min
Diaolongzui Cape (15:30)
The easternmost point of the Laoshan peninsula. Dramatic cliffs plunging into the open sea. On clear days, you can see for miles in every direction. This is one of the best sunset spots in all of Qingdao — plan to be here in the late afternoon.
Photo tip: Use a wide-angle lens for the cliff-sea panorama. Golden hour light (16:00–17:30 in autumn) paints the cliffs warm orange.
⏱ Spend: 30–45 min
Shazikou Fishing Village (17:00)
A traditional fishing village on the return route. The seafood here is as fresh as it gets — caught that morning by local boats. Pick your fish, clams, and prawns from the tanks at a village restaurant. They cook it simply: steamed, grilled, or in a light broth.
Budget: ¥80–150 per person for a seafood feast. Cash preferred.
Signature dish: Laoshan clam soup (崂山蛤蜊汤) — local clams in a clear broth with tofu and seaweed. Simple, delicious, and unique to this area.
⏱ Spend: 1–1.5 hours
Return to City (18:30–19:30)
40 min drive back via the coastal road. If the timing is right, you will catch the sunset over the mountains behind you. Arrive back in the city in time for a late dinner or a rest.
⏱ Drive time: 40 min to Shinan
